Most people choose between the Kihei-Wailea area of South Maui and the Lahaina-Kaanapali area of West Maui. We’ve stayed in both areas: both are fabulous and have their pros and cons.
Kihei-Wailea: The weather in the Kihei area is generally a little warmer and sunnier than other parts of the island. We think Kihei is ideal for those looking to stretch their dollar a bit…it can be done on Maui! There are plenty of condos to choose from. We own a nice little studio condo and if you are interested in humpback whales, we are right across the street from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Education Center. You can check out our affordable Maui condo here. This elegantly remodeled unit is ideal for couples or small families (3 people) who are looking for a convenient location while being smart with their budget.
Lahaina-Kaanapali: We absolutely love Lahaina! West Maui gets a few more clouds occasionally, but the breezes are refreshing. We typically shun large high rise condo units, but if that is your cup of tea, there are plenty of those to choose from in the Kaanapali area. Our favorite place to stay in West Maui is Puamana. If you can afford it, we highly recommend it. It has a quiet, residential feel to it and it is a short walk or bike ride to all the action in Lahaina.
